Here’s more information about the simple ingredients I used to make this chicken cordon bleu recipe.

  • Celery Stalks – They add texture and nutrition to the casserole.
  • Yellow Onion – The onions add aroma and flavor to the dish.
  • Salted Butter – If you use salted butter, you won’t have to add more salt to enhance the other flavors.
  • Eggs – They thicken the milk and add flavor and texture to the bread as it bakes.
  • Milk – This is what helps the bread turn into a crust on top. You will use more milk in the creamy sauce base, too.
  • White Bread – You’ll use this as the crust layer on the casserole.
  • Cooked Ham – Thick-cut deli ham or some ham steaks will be perfect in this recipe.
  • Chicken Breasts – This dish uses shredded chicken or some leftover cubed chicken.
  • Swiss Cheese – Classic chicken cordon bleu uses Swiss cheese, so stick with it.
  • Cream of Chicken Soup – This is the base of the creamy sauce.
  • Green Onions – Use fresh green onions as a garnish.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Add Dijon mustard to the sauce. This will make the sauce pop with tangy notes.
  • Sprinkle garlic powder on the chicken breasts. It only takes a little bit to enhance the flavor of the chicken.
  • Sprinkle parmesan cheese on top. This will give the crust a bigger flavor.
  • Use bread crumbs instead of chopping up bread. Just sprinkle the Panko crumbs instead of making cubed bread soaked in milk and eggs.

Storage Instructions

Store leftover chicken cordon bleu in the fridge, covered in an airtight container, for up to 3 days.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole Tips and Tricks

  • For the best flavor, use black forest ham. Ask the deli to slice it thick.
  • Whole milk will have the creamiest texture.
  • Mix up the kind of bread you use. Some people like to use rye bread instead of white bread.

What Is Chicken Cordon Bleu Casserole?

This is the casserole form of classic chicken cordon bleu. The original recipe involves thin chicken breasts stuffed with ham and Swiss cheese and covered in buttery Panko breadcrumbs. But all that stuffing and breading is too involved for busy weeknights. So, I took these classic ingredients and made a casserole version. It’s a kid-friendly recipe that everyone loves.

Can I Use Leftover Chicken?

Yes, you can use leftover chicken in this recipe. It’s also a great way to use rotisserie chicken. If you’re going to bake the chicken, I suggest using boneless, skinless chicken breasts.

Can I Make Ahead?

Yes, you can make this easy casserole ahead of time. Store the baked casserole covered in the refrigerator for up to three days. Then, reheat it in the oven, and dinner is ready!

Can I Add Pasta Or Rice?

This is a fantastic way to make a casserole even more filling and comforting. I suggest serving it with egg noodles or your favorite type of rice. You could replace the white bread, eggs, and milk with flat egg noodles or rice.
