What Ingredients Do I Need To Make An Orange Old Fashioned?
The Alcohol
The Whiskey: Bourbon is the traditional option owing to its sweeter profile, but if you are a Rye fan then that can bring an interesting spicy character to the drink. Either way you are going to want to choose a quality whiskey. The Old Fashioned is a spirit-forward co*cktail, so there’s no hiding a low-quality whiskey behind mixers here.
Recommended Florida Bourbons:
- Florida Double Cask Bourbonfrom St. Augustine Distillery
- Bear Classic Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon from Winter Park Distilling Co
- Florida Reserve Bourbon from Timber Creek Distillery
Recommended Florida Rye:
• Florida Black Rye Whiskey from Timber Creek Distillery
• Mr. Rye 100% Rye Whiskey from Kozuba & Sons Distillery

The Mixers
The Sweetener: If you want to get an arm workout then by all means go with a sugar cube, but we recommend making your own simple syrup so that you always have some handy to throw in your co*cktails. For this recipe we use our Florida orange simple syrup, but if you are making a more traditional Old Fashioned then use our Florida cane simple syrup. Another great option is our homemade orange blossom honey simple syrup that intensifies the honey notes in the whiskey as well as giving it subtle undertones of orange.
The Bitters: We use Angostura Orange Bitters to really double down on the orange flavors, but any bitters will work. Angostura Aromatic Bitters is the most versatile, so if you’re starting out in the world of co*cktails and building your bar cart then go with that one.
Recommended Bitters: ANGOSTURA® Orange bitters, 4 oz
The Garnish: It has to be an orange twist. (Although if you want to sneak in a Luxardo Maraschino Cherry we won’t judge).
Sneaky Cherry:LUXARDO Maraschino Cherries, 14.1 oz
What Equipment Should I Use To Make An Orange Old Fashioned?
The Glass: There’s a reason the Old Fashioned has a glass named after it. The Old Fashioned glass (also called rocks glass) is what you’ll find this drink served in when you order one in a bar. Typically holding between 8-10 oz these are perfect for drinks on the rocks, or spirit forward co*cktails such as an Old Fashioned. If you’re starting out in the world of glassware, we’d recommend going with the double Old Fashioned glasses (also called Double Rocks glasses). These are slightly larger and hold between 10-12 oz. This makes them more versatile as they allow more space for large cube ice and can fit all kinds of other co*cktails.
Recommended Glass: MARQUIS By Waterford Double Old Fashioned Glasses, Set of 4
The Ice: The Old Fashioned Floridan is made to be a sipper, so unless you enjoy a watery mess you’ll want to go with a larger cube. You can find some great (and cheap) large ice cube molds on Amazon.
Recommended Ice Cube Mold: co*ckTAILOR Large Ice Mold, 6 Slot
Shaken or Stirred: Shaking an old fashioned is like ordering a steak well-done. Please don’t do it. You can stir right in the glass that your drinking out of, or if you’re making more than one at a time then it’s easier in a mixing glass. If you enjoy spirit forward co*cktails like an Old Fashioned, a Negroni, or a Manhattans, then we’d suggest getting yourself a mixing glass. It’s one of our most used pieces of bar equipment
Recommended Mixing Glass: HIWARE Thick Bottom Crystal Mixing Glass, 24 oz
